Subject: Please consider drafting Labor Protection Act regarding the topic of extending maternity leave from 98 days to 180 days

Wednesday 17 July 2024 at 0900PM at letter submission point floor 1 of parliament building. Mr. Vorasit Liangprasit, Chairman of the Special Committee of Consideration of the Labor Protection Act. Draft and the committee accept submission of letter from Mr. Kornchai Kaewmahawongse, representative from Employers' Confederation of Thailand and the colleagues regarding the topic of extending maternity leave from 98 days to 180 days consideration, to be appropriate and consistent with the economic conditions of the country which the Employer's Confederation of Thailand and employer partners strongly disagree. This is because maternity leave rights of 98 days already is appropriate in accordance to International Labour Organization, not to mention many countries also does not extend the maternity leave days any longer than 98 days. Moreover, many entrepreneurs, especially the medium and small business sector, are being affected by the economic conditions from both within and outside the country. They also have to find people to work in place of employees who are on maternity leave for up to 180 days, and some work requires specific expertise, which will cause issues. So they kindly ask the committee to carefully review the letter to lessen the business owners and labours burden. Mr. Vorasit Liangprasit expressed concerns regarding the topic as there are vast majority of people who will be affected and will consider the law to ensure fairness for all parties.
